TM - 279 - Schadenfreude

“Gesundheit!”
K’tanya just gave her daughter, who had come home for Spring Break and was lounging by the pool, one of those looks. After all, it was totally possible to tan and study German vocabulary at the same time. She had done it herself on many occasions. “Definition, dear.”
Sighing, Destiny continued to apply a generous portion of suntan oil to her arms as she tried to remember the word in question. “Okay so that’s the word that sounds like that one storytelling chick from Arabia or whatever.”
“Scheherazade?”
“Sure.”
“It doesn’t really sound all that much like it to me.”
“Yeah well, close enough. Anyway, that’s the one that was all about having fun at other people’s expense or something.”
It was close enough to right as far as K’tanya was concerned, but she lifted an eyebrow just the same. “What does that have to do with Scheherazade?”
“Well, that was the story of a girl who totally told stories so that the king wouldn’t kill her, right?”
“Yes…”
“Well you know that the other girls in the king’s harem were up talking and laughing about how she was totally going to get executed, and probably going into detail about it because they are vicious little things. Since that’s what the word means, and it sounds kind of like the name of the storyteller, it sticks in my head.”
K’tanya thought about that for a moment, then shrugged as she set the paper with the words on it aside and got to her feet. “Whatever works for you, dear. Now, let’s see if we can find a nice pool boy to help us put some of that oil on our backs, shall we?” There was no need to tell her that her mother had been that very storyteller. Not yet, at any rate.
Destiny, who and recently started developing and was getting more than a bit interested in the opposite sex, was more than happy to go along.
