K’tanya sighed in annoyance and tossed the book aside. It landed on a pile of similar books that had slowly grown larger with each passing day. “Kotori!”

Her spirit companion appeared nearby. “Yes?”

“These books are all wrong.”

“How exactly are they wrong?”

“Well take the one I just finished for instance. The mermaid is supposed to marry her prince and live happily ever after, not commit suicide after he breaks her heart!”

“Apparently the authors did not believe the same thing.”

“Well then there’s only one thing to do. Retell the stories and turn them into a theme park.”

K’tanya pushed tendrils of flame colored hair away from her face, the red and gold strands seeming to burn warmly in the bright light of the noonday sun.  She paused for a moment, shading her amber eyes and sighing softly to herself as the road she was on seemed to go on forever.  At this rate, she would never find a place to call home and she would be forced to wander the earth alone for eternity.

Suddenly, a shiver overtook her, and a moment later a petulant voice sounded next to her ear.  “Just look at the mess that you’ve gotten us into this time.”

Well, almost alone, she amended to herself.  “I told you, Kotori, I’m not going to serve my father’s designs anymore.  I needed to take a stand.”

“I do believe that coming back to this mortal realm was not taking a stand so much as it was complete stupidity.  If your father finds you on this place, then he can simply kill you and you'll be in his hands once again regardless, and that's only if he still wants you around.  After all, it’s not like you’re the only bastard child that has come from his loins.”

She turned to look at the empty air beside her, her eyes blazing with an inner fire.  “It was my choice, and nobody asked you to come along.”

A shadowy form took shape, just barely visible in the bright light, the voice a bit softer.  “Well somebody had to keep an eye on you and try and keep you out of trouble.”

K’tanya's answering smile lit up her face until her beauty swelled even the shriveled heart of her long dead companion.  “Thank you, Kotori.  I don’t know what I would do without you.”
