It had gone on long enough. K’tanya had known this for a while, but she had turned a blind eye to that fact, not wanting to admit it was over. However she had spent quite a bit of time thinking about it while trying to relax in her tropical paradise.

She still loved him, in her own way. However as much as it hurt she needed to face the fact that he just didn’t feel the same, and nothing she did was going to change that simple truth.

It was time to talk Aidan, and then finally let him go.

It seemed calm enough. There was barely a ripple to show what was going on underneath the surface. When something did mar the apparent calm it was generally nothing more than a brief glimpse of what lied beneath, before it quickly sank once more into the depths.

Nobody saw the darkness that lurked down there. Nobody knew how much pain and hurt was there, or the fears that were hidden from the light of day. The few who had dared, found only what they wanted to find and little else.

She was perfection incarnate, and that’s all anyone could see.

She woke before the sun.

Slipping into a swimming suit and sarong, she decided to take a walk along the beach. Soon she lost track of time, and early morning turned to mid-afternoon.

Eventually she started back to the bungalow, and she noticed a couple having a picnic near the water. Their horse was resting nearby under some palm trees.

She couldn’t resist wandering over to the animal and lightly scratching its forehead. It whickered softly, and she smiled as she gave it a bit more attention. Then she left the horse and couple to their moment in the sun.

K’tanya browsed through a quaint little shop on some tropical island who’s name she couldn’t quite remember. It was simply a way to pass an afternoon.

As she passed a stand filled with postcards, one of them caught her eye and she paused to pick it up. It was a romantic picture of two people who were obviously very much in love. K’tanya looked at it for a moment, then walked over to the old man running the shop and paid for the card.

As soon as she was outside, she ripped it into pieces and promptly threw them away.

K’tanya sighed heavily as she looked at one of her traveling companions. "Why are we doing this again?"

Archimedes, now in his human form so as not to scare people, cocked his head slightly. "I think a better question is why are you making me do it with you."

"Because if he’s going to make me suffer, then you have to suffer too."

The griffin sighed. "You could have said no."

"Yes, but I’m trying to change, and Adam says this helps build character. What do you think?"

Archimedes snorted softly. "I think flying by plane is for the birds."

It was raining when she got home. A soft summer rain that cleansed the air of dust and left a scent that had always been her favorite. Now she barely noticed as she pulled her phone out and dialed his number.

It went straight to his voice mail.

"I’ll be ready to leave first thing in the morning. I’m packing light, just my passport and a few things to tide me over. I’ll get everything else I need later. I’ll see you then."

Then she hung up, walked out to the balcony, and let the rain wash the night away.

She kept them in a small box in the very back of her closet. It wasn’t often that she pulled them out, but once in a while the mood would strike and she would feel the need to relive parts of her life that were now long over.

Here were the places she had once seen that no longer existed, or were far different from how she knew them. Here were friends and lovers who had long ago drifted out of her life, whether by distance or by death.

Here were not just pictures, but memories she could never forget.

Sometimes the memories would hit her with the force of a freight train. They often caught her off guard, as she was used to being the one who caused heartbreak and not the one being broken, but it had happened once.

When the memories took over, there was really only one thing she could do. She found herself a penthouse suite in Memphis, ordered fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches from room service, and spent a weekend drinking in the sounds of the man who had broken her heart as no other man ever could.

She would always love him.

There was just something about the smell of leather. It didn’t matter what mood she might be in or how bad things were going, that smell always managed to soothe her in a way that few things could.

As lovely as it was though, the smell was only the beginning. The styles and colors called to her as well. So many in fact that she simply could not stop at one or two pairs, but found herself with at least half a dozen bags to help calm her spirit.

There was a reason they called it retail therapy after all.
