"Stop right there."

Destiny froze in place, her fingers still in the process of pulling a still warm chocolate chip cookie out of the cookie jar.

"Drop it."

Reluctantly, she did as she was told. As she turned around to face her mother, Destiny stuck her bottom lip out slightly in a pout. "It’s not fair. You have eyes in the back of your head."

K’tanya rolled her eyes slightly. "You are such a drama queen. I don’t have eyes in the back of my head. I have a network of security cameras. Now go to your room, young lady."

K’tanya watched as her daughter moved through the water with what seemed to be almost effortless ease. Destiny had always taken to the water, often spending hours in the bathtub even as a toddler. Now she had joined the swim team at school and rarely seemed to leave the pool.

Given her own fiery nature, K’tanya didn’t really understand Destiny’s love of the water. She wondered if perhaps it was a trait the child had inherited from her father.

Perhaps one day she would ask him, but for now she was simply content to watch their daughter in her element.

K’tanya had spent the last hour searching the beach for her daughter. When she finally found Destiny near the water, sniffling softly, she didn’t have the heart to scold her. “What’s the matter, Pumpkin?”

Destiny pointed at a nearby dog that was happily eating something. “He knocked me down and ruined my ice cream.”

“Well you know what they say. There’s no use crying over dropped ice cream.”

“It’s spilled milk, mom”

“Close enough. Now come with me and we’ll get you a new one. Double scoop this time.”

Smiling through the tears, Destiny nodded and followed after her mother.

Destiny sat at the table, watching her mother. She had recently discovered that boys might be of some interest, and was curious. “Mom, was daddy your first boyfriend?”

K’tanya laughed and shook her head. “Afraid not, honey. My first boyfriend was a guy named Adam. Nice enough guy, but he totally lacked in the fashion department, didn’t listen very well, and was far too gullible. I ended up breaking up with him.”

“What happened to him?”

“Oh it broke his heart, the poor guy. I heard he ended up with some trollop who had a thing for snakes and apples.”
