K’tanya looked at her new mother-in-law with disbelief. The old hag couldn’t be serious, right? Best to check and make sure, she supposed. “Are you serious?”
“Why of course I’m serious, my dear. I thought this would be the absolute best gift that I could possibly bestow upon you.”
Now K’tanya knew that the old Queen was senile, which wasn’t actually a bad thing really. Senility meant that soon the old bitch would be incapable of ruling and that meant it was only a matter of time before the Prince took the throne. Which of course meant that K’tanya would be Queen herself much sooner than she had originally thought. Still, it was a rather odd choice for a gift. “An apple?”
“A magic apple,” the Queen corrected as she held out the bright red fruit. “One bite of this and your life will be blessed with good fortune and true love for ever and always.”
K’tanya was skeptical, but at the same time she couldn’t exactly refuse a gift from the old bat either, even if she didn’t really need any magic to make her life better. It was already perfect after all. So with that thought in mind, she reached out and smiled brightly as she took the apple. “Well in that case, thank you very much for the gift, Your Majesty.”
“Take a bite for me, dear? It would do my old heart good to see such a thing on this of all days.”
Sighing, K’tanya barely managed to keep from rolling her eyes as she turned the wattage up on her smile a bit. “I would be only too happy to give you such a gift in return.” As much as she hated apples, K’tanya put the fruit to her luscious lips and took a small bite.
A moment later her eyes widened as she felt the poison start to take effect, paralyzing her almost instantly. The offending fruit slipped from her fingers as she fell gracefully to the floor, and as her eyes fluttered close she made a mental note to destroy all apple trees on the planet just as soon as her Prince came to wake her up again.
Oh, and to fry the old Queen into so much ash.
