Dec. 7th, 2009 01:20 pm1) How much of the character's backstory did you know when you started to play them?
Speaking specifically of this particular muse, not a damn thing. I just made it up as we went along. Okay, not entirely true. I knew she was half Angel and half Demon, and I knew that resulted in serious daddy issues. Otherwise, nada!
2) How specific or vague do you tend to make a character's background? Why?
With K'tanya, the backstory is more fluid than the Atlantic Ocean. It shifts and moves in whichever direction her current conversation happens to take her. With others I tend to be a bit more concrete and pay more attention to all the little details.
3) What purpose do you feel backstory serves?
It fleshes out a character and makes it easier to keep track of where they've been and how the past effects them now and in the future. Of course, with K'tanya that's a moot point because she can be anywhere at anytime.
4) What have you learned from your character's backstory?
You mean other than the fact that she's a manipulative bitch, a perfect angel, and everything in between? Not much.
5) Is it difficult to play with a character who has little/no backstory? Why or why not?
Not this one. She just changes it later on anyway to suit her whims or the circumstances anyway, so the biggest problem I have is keeping the various relationships straight. That's what the cheat sheet on her profile page is for. :)
7) For original characters: How much world building do you do in your character's backstory? Do you establish an entire family / community society in the process of telling your character's history?
Since K'tanya here is meant to be the ultimate Mary Sue, I don't really bother building up much of a world or anything for her unless it's needed for what she's writing or roleplaying. She just kind of skips through other people's worlds and canons and takes what she wants to fit her circumstances. All subject to change at her whim of course.
8) How much research / work have you put into your character's backstory so far? Are you finished, or is it an ongoing process?
I research nothing! Okay no, I do research specific moments or things in other canons when I need it for what she's doing, but otherwise I just make shit up and see what happens.
Bonus points: Work on your backstory by creating a timeline of events that shaped your character's life. If you already did the timeline prompt from way back when, now's a perfect time to update it.
...AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! To quote my pain in the ass Mary Sue...AS IF!
