K’tanya knew that it was going to happen eventually.
She knew that the day would come when she would accidentally let her guard down for just one brief moment, and in doing so allow it to be broken once again, as it had been broken a thousand times before. She knew it, because it was a vicious cycle that had constantly repeated itself over the years. A cycle that she continued to allow to go on, despite all the times that she had sworn that she would never let it happen again.
And it didn’t seem to matter how many precautions she took, or how much she might try and harden it against the world. It didn’t matter how carefully she tried to handle things, or how many times she might try and glue the ragged edges back together, hoping beyond all possible hope that she could make it work just this one time. It still always ended up breaking.
