K’tanya stood on the outskirts of the courtyard, watching the children as they talked in small groups or played basketball. Her eyes followed one child in particular, a petite little redhead of about ten years of age. The little girl seemed healthy and happy enough, and it made K’tanya proud to see that the child seemed to be making friends so easily. Not that she was all that surprised really. Like mother, like daughter after all.

Yet the sorrow that she still felt at having to give her baby up weighed heavily on K’tanya, both in mind and spirit. There had been no choice really, as she knew that her evil father would stop at nothing to get his hands on the child if he knew of her existence. K’tanya knew that it was better for the girl to grow up in safety, with people who could understand her special needs. Such knowledge did not make it any easier to deal with however.

“You could go talk to her.”

To her credit, K’tanya didn’t start at the sound of the cultured voice, but merely glanced at the beautiful women in white who now stood beside her. “No. It’s better this way. For both of us.”

“I hardly think that letting her grow up without the knowledge of who and what she really is can be all that good for her. Even the other children here know that she is as different from them as they are from human children. She has already started asking questions.”

K’tanya bravely fought back the tears, but one still managed to slip past her carefully erected defenses. “How can I tell her the truth, Emma? How can I tell her that I gave her away, even if it was for her own protection? How do I tell her that I never even told her father she existed?”

Emma Frost, who had never had much use for tears, looked away from her and back to the children. “You tell her the same way that you would tell anyone else. Children need protecting, but they don’t need to be coddled. She has more power now than most of the adults on the staff, so we treat her accordingly. To do less would not only endanger her, but also everyone around her. Just tell her the truth, and let her decide the rest.”

She knew that Emma was right, and that she had to be strong, for her daughter’s sake. “All right. I’ll do it.” Taking a deep breath, K’tanya walked out from under the shadow of the building and out into the light as she crossed the yard towards the little girl.

It was time she faced her Destiny.
